Paul Mattlin

Paul Mattlin

Paul was always devoted to a life of service. As a teen, he started volunteering for the Whiting Fire Department, before transitioning to a paid-on-call position at the age of 18. There he earned the first of many certifications as a firefighter and began to build upon his skills. In May of 1998, Paul graduated from Midstate Technical College with EMT-basic and intermediate degrees, beginning his career at a local hospital emergency department, and in May of 2000, Paul graduated from Midstate Technical College with an Advanced Paramedic degree. In 2002, he was hired into his dream job as a Firefighter/Paramedic with the Stevens Point Fire Department. For over 20 years Paul led by example, and demonstrated the characteristics and qualities that defined his career, namely dedication, hard work, mastery of his craft, and a selfless pride in serving the public. Over the years, he continued his education with Midstate Technical College, completing a number of firefighter certification courses. In 2017, Paul was promoted to Captain, serving his hometown community until his retirement in August of 2022. Sadly, he lost a lengthy battle with colon cancer just seven months later. It was one of Paul’s final wishes to be able to give back to both the college and the community, which gave him the opportunity to fulfill his calling for so many years, while also giving others the opportunity to follow in his footsteps. Thus, the Paul Mattlin Memorial Scholarship.
